A Search for Atomic Hydrogen and Molecular Gas Absorption in High-velocity Clouds
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have searched for H I, CO, and HCO` in absorption along 16 lines of sight toward high-velocity clouds (HVCs). Of these, seven lines of sight are toward true HVCs, two are toward the Magellanic Stream, six are toward the outer arm complex, and one is toward a probable Galactic cloud. We detected absorption along two lines of sight toward the outer arm complex, at and 147 K, T S \ 38 respectively. The detections are consistent with normal disk H I absorption. The nondetections suggest that HVCs are weak H I absorbers and that they contain primarily warm H I, with a surface Ðlling fraction of cold (D50 K) gas of less than 7%. In one case, we obtained a 3 p lower limit to the spin temperature of 180È320 K. Upper limits for CO and HCO` emission along seven lines of sight are the most sensitive probes of molecular emission yet toward HVCs. The best upper limits imply N(CO)\ 5.5] 1014 and cm~2, assuming solar abundances and in one case a molecN(H2)\ 5.5] 1018 ular gas fraction less than 17% at the 3 p level. Averaging the CO nondetections to test for broader, low-level absorption implies N(CO)\ 4.8] 1014 cm~2. Subject headings : galaxies : kinematics and dynamics È radio lines : ISM È ISM: structure

Simulating the formation of molecular clouds. II. Rapid formation from turbulent initial conditions
The characteristic lifetimes of molecular clouds remain uncertain and subject to debate, with arguments having recently been advanced in support of shortlived clouds, with lifetimes of only a few Myr, and in support of much longerlived clouds, with lifetimes of 10 Myr or more. One argument that has been advanced in favour of long cloud lifetimes is the apparent difficulty involved in converting...
متن کاملThe formation of molecular clouds in spiral galaxies
We present Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of molecular cloud formation in spiral galaxies. These simulations model the response of a non-selfgravitating gaseous disk to a galactic potential. The spiral shock induces high densities in the gas, and considerable structure in the spiral arms, which we identify as molecular clouds. We regard the formation of these structures as du...
متن کاملA FUSE Survey of Molecular Hydrogen in Intermediate-Velocity Clouds in the Milky Way Halo
Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) data is used to investigate the molecular hydrogen (H2) content of intermediate-velocity clouds (IVCs) in the lower halo of the Milky Way. We analyze interstellar absorption towards 56 (mostly extragalactic) background sources to study H2 absorption in the Lymanand Werner bands in 61 IVC components at H i column densities ≥ 10 cm. For data with good...
متن کاملMolecular Gas in the Galactic Halo and Beyond
I review recent observations of molecular gas in the halo of the Milky Way and in the Magellanic Clouds. Far-ultraviolet absorption line studies of molecular hydrogen (H2) with ORFEUS and FUSE have unveiled the presence of a diffuse molecular hydrogen component in intermediateand high-velocity clouds in the Galactic halo. Although the number of measurements is still quite small, the data sugges...
متن کاملHI Narrow Line Absorption in Dark Clouds
We have used the Arecibo telescope to carry out an unbiased survey of 31 dark clouds in the Taurus/Perseus region for narrow absorption features in HI (λ 21cm) and OH (1667 and 1665 MHz) emission. We detected HI narrow line absorption (HINLA) in about 80% of the clouds that we observed. HINLA and OH emission, observed simultaneously are remarkably well correlated. Spectrally, they have the same...
